Rain, Water, and Easter

St. Peter & St. John Lutheran Churches
Evansville & Ruma, IL

Mon, Mar 28, 2005

Some might think the rain ruined a perfectly good Easter.  The rain might have dampened your spirits and clothes - but ruin Easter?  No!  For Christ is Risen!  He is Risen Indeed, Alleluia!

It was not the first time the Risen Lord Himself connected water to Easter.  He took rain He had sent from the skies, just plain water, and combined it with His Word so that it was a life-giving water, rich in grace, and a washing of the new birth in the Holy Spirit for you when the Lord rained it down on you in Baptism.  At the Font He made you a son or daughter of the King of Kings.

You can be a family member and still be separated by great distances.  Some people traveled many miles to be with their families at Easter.  But earthly celebrations can be tinged with sorrow as we remember family members separated from us by death.  Their bodies lie in their graves - some only a short distance from us by mileage, but a great distance in other ways.

When Jesus died and went into His grave, it looked as if Death had beaten Jesus in the great battle of all eternity.  But Death did not separate us from the Lord.  In fact we are eternally united to the Lord's death and raised to life forever with Him.  Romans 6 says, "Do you not know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? If we have been united with Him in His death, we will certainly also be united with Him in His resurrection."

You are no longer separated from God, for the Father raised His Son from the dead on the third day and caused Him to be seen, so that everyone who believes in Him receives forgiveness of sins through His Name.  Rejoice, for our Lord Jesus Christ has crossed over from death to life.  No longer believe that you must get a grip on life because now you know that Life Himself, Jesus Christ, has a hold on you - therefore you too have crossed from death to life and will not be condemned.
