A Little While

John 16:16-22

Rev. John F. Wurst

Jubilate Sunday
The Lutheran Church of Christ the King
Duluth, Minnesota

Sun, Apr 21, 2013

"For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified." (1 Cor. 2:2)

John 16:16-22

The Fourth Sunday of Easter (Jubilate Sunday)

In the Name of the Father and + of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

In chapter 15, Saint John records the words of Jesus as He describes Himself as the Vine and His Father as the Vinedresser. He goes on to describe believers and unbelievers. Later in the chapter, Jesus addresses the fact that believers will be hated by the world because they bear Jesus Name and confess the same.

John continues in chapter 16 with Jesus words of comfort, "I have said all these things to you to keep you from falling away." (16, 1) Jesus then goes on to teach about the work of the Holy Spirit in His Church. Jesus promises His disciples and Church the Comforter who will come and teach, point them to the Christ, comfort them during the attacks of the flesh, world, and the devil.

Turning to the Gospel lesson for today, Jesus continues His teaching of comfort with His disciples and He tells them, "A little while, and you see Me no longer; and again a little while, and you will see Me. (16, 16)

Jesus is making reference to His death and resurrection. His hour is upon Him. It's time to go up to the holy altar of God and make the one perfect sacrifice to the Father in the stead of all mankind. It's time to go atone for the sins of the world. It's time to die.

In a little while, the Son of God will be dead. The disciples Teacher will be killed for the Truth. In a little while, Jesus will give up His spirit to give life to all sinners who believe on His name for salvation. He will die and His Blood will flow to the ends of the earth to cover the souls of all who believe in Him.

In a little while, death stronghold will be broken because the Son of God will rise from the dead in victory over sin, death, and the power of the devil. In a little while, the disciples will see their Lord and Teacher alive and glorified. They will see with their own eyes the fulfillment of Jesus words when He said He would rebuild the Temple in three days.

In a little while, Jesus will once again walk on the beach of the Sea of Galilee. He will eat with them. Talk with them. Prepare them for His return to His Father who is in heaven.

In a little while, Jesus will return to this earth in glory and the sounds of trumpets blaring and He will take you with Him into His eternal kingdom that has no end. In a little while, you will join all the saints who've gone before you in faith to live and worship the One true God and His Son, the Lamb who once was slain. You will listen to the sermons of The Lord as He preaches from the throne.

In a little while, you will come before this altar of God to receive from the crucified and resurrected Lord, His Body and His Blood for the forgiveness of your sins, life, and salvation. In a little while you will behold your salvation as it is placed on your tongue and poured down your throat.

In a little while all of the treachery and evil of this world will pass away and Jesus will come again in glory. In the meantime your life will be sorrowful. You will experience despair and sadness. You may even die before Jesus comes again.

No matter. You are Baptized. In a little while, you will stand before The Lord your God and Him only shall you serve because Jesus died on the cross to redeem you a lost and condemned creature. In a little while - beautiful words with which the holy Church responds, I can't wait. Come Lord Jesus, come quickly come.

In the Name of the Father and + of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

The peace of God that surpasses all understand guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Amen.
