The Magnificat (Mary's Song)

Luke 1:46-56

Rev. John F. Wurst

Advent feria II (midweek)
The Lutheran Church of Christ the King
Duluth, Minnesota

Wed, Dec 12, 2012

"For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified." (1 Cor. 2:2)

Luke 1:46-56

Advent feria II - The Magnificat (Mary's Song)

In the Name of the Father and + of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

A young girl, maybe fifteen years old, a virgin betrothed to Joseph, is visited by a messenger of The Lord. The messenger proclaims the Word of God into her ears. The angel says to this young virgin, "You have found favor with God. Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son and shall call His Name Jesus."

God chose this young earthen vessel to give refuge and sanctuary to His Son. This young womb, untouched by human hands, soiled with sin by nature, yet righteous in the sight of God, will bring forth a Son and He will be great.

Mary was filled with the joy of The Lord. Her song starts with these words, "My soul magnifies The Lord." Two key words here: soul and magnifies. When Mary proclaims that her soul magnifies The Lord, she is really saying that her entire life magnifies The Lord.

Mary doesn't mean mere words or simple deeds. She says her whole being rejoices. She says, "and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior." Mary is blessed because she believes. She believes all the prophecies of the prophets are taking place right now in her womb.

The first proclamation was by The Lord Himself when He said to the serpent in Eden, "I will put enmity between you and the woman, between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head and you shall bruise His heel." Isaiah said, "Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son and shall call His Name Immanuel." All of this is taking place in Mary to save the world from sin, death, and the power of the devil.

Mary sings of God's might. She proclaims the Gospel telling the world about God's mercy to all generations. Her Son was sent to save His people from their sins. She sings of how God casts down the proud and rebukes the rich.

Mary's song is now your song. You sing and proclaim this same Gospel message tonight as your soul magnifies The Lord. You sing because God's mercy is shown you in the forgiveness of your sins. You sing because God's mercy is shown you in the nourishment of your soul. You sing because of the Christ Child who was Incarnate of the Holy Spirit for you. Your soul magnifies The Lord because He redeemed you by His Blood. Your soul rejoices with God your Savior because Jesus saved you.

Like Mary, you don't deserve the mercy of God. You only deserve punishment and death for your sins and transgressions. Mary's song tells you of the deliverer God the Father sent to you. He sent you His Son, lowly and humble, conceived in the womb of a virgin undefiled, to take your flesh into His divinity, to be born true Man, for you.

Cast aside your personal desires. Climb down from your thrones. Confess your sins and repent. Turn away from the evil desires of your flesh. Stop being like the rich young ruler who cannot live without his idols. Stop being like the rich man who rejects the humble and needy. Humble yourselves before The Lord your Maker. He will forgive, renew, strengthen, and make you new in His image, through His Son, Jesus Christ.

The Son of Man is coming soon. Repent. Watch and pray lest you fall into temptation. Believe in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior and you will live. Let your faith sing out before the world and magnify The Lord with your soul and spirit.

Praise The Lord for His righteousness that covers your soul. Sing praises to His Name that is written on your soul. Sing because of the death He died for you. Sing because His Blood covers your soul. Sing because His Word is spoken in your ears. Sing because His Body and Blood are poured out for you. Sing because you are forgiven.

Oh, clap your hands, all you peoples!

Shout to God with the voice of triumph!

For the Lord Most High is awesome;

He is a great King over all the earth.

In the Name of the Father and + of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

The peace of God which surpasses all understanding guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Amen.
