John 1:19-28

Rev. John F. Wurst

The Fourth Sunday in Advent
The Lutheran Church of Christ the King
Duluth, Minnesota

Sun, Dec 23, 2012

"For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified." (1 Cor. 2:2)

John 1:19-28

The Fourth Sunday in Advent (Rorate Coeli)

In the Name of the Father and + of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? Deep down, into the inner depths of your soul, you know and believe you only seek your own glory. You seek to be honored. You seek praise and power.

The depth of your illness cannot be exposed by any psychiatrist, sociologist, mental health doctor, program, or by any other means. Your malady resides deep into the core of your body, soul and mind. In fact, your malady, that is your disease, infects your soul. You cannot escape it. You are a sinner.

Face it, you want nothing to do with God. You're like the Pharisees, Gentiles, and others who came out to persecute John the Baptizer. You came armed with your pride and arrogance, your knowledge and your gifts. You seek your glory and wish to persuade the voice of Christ to join you in your quest. Repent. Turn from your evil ways.

God has sent you you a voice crying in the wilderness; Make straight the way of The Lord. Your life is full of valleys and high places. The roads you travel are full of twists and turns. You seek the comfort of the night and darkness where your flesh and the world give to you unending pleasures. Repent.

Like John the Baptizer, I and all preachers care nothing of ourselves. We point with out finger to the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. When the proclamation is sounded by the voice of Christ, Make straight the way of the Lord, the message to you is humble yourself before The Lord. Jesus is here. You are in the presence of the Lord. Jesus is preaching. He is delivering His mercy.

Your life is not yours. It belongs to God. Your life is not just about breathing, eating, sleeping, and working. Life is worship. You might not understand this or believe it until you empty yourself of your worldly treasures and false gods.

Everything about John's life was to point to the One greater than himself who was coming to save the world. You life is no different. Life is about worshiping God in all you do. Life is set between idolatry, which is death, and faith, which is participation in the life of Christ. John's life was no different. John denied he was the Christ, Elijah, or even a prophet. He was the voice of one crying in the wilderness. John confessed the Christ. He believed in and worshiped The Lord Jesus Christ who is present. John said He is coming.

Jesus is here. He descended from heaven to be Incarnate of the Holy Ghost, to be born of the Virgin Mary, to suffer, to die in your place, and to rise again from the dead to give believers everlasting life in His Name.

The beauty of this Gospel lesson is it deals with the great article of doctrine about Christ. The Apostle tells you that as Jesus gives you life in His Name, you should receive The Lord, hear Him, kiss Him, embrace Him, and cling to Him in good times and bad. You should never let your flesh, the world, or even the old dragon himself tear you away from the Christ.

You eternal life and the whole doctrine of Jesus Christ rests and is built on the Jesus, the Chief Cornerstone. Jesus is your salvation. When you believe this doctrine and possess it with every part of your life; body, mind, and spirit, you possess the truth. You possess the Christ.

When you possess the truth, when you possess Jesus, your life will be conformed to Him through the power of His Spirit. You will deny yourself and take up the crosses The Lord lays on your back. You will deny the pleasures of the world and the temptations of the evil one and you will charge into battle and be victorious.

Jesus is the One who enlightens you souls to the truth. Jesus is the One who fills your life with good things. Jesus is the One who forgives you all your sins. Jesus. Yes, Jesus is here in His Word, His Body, and His Blood - FOR YOU!

Jesus is the One who circumcised your heart and cut out all your diseases. He is the Great Physician of body and soul. He gives you His immortal medicine to heal all your iniquities. Jesus is the One who binds up the broken-hearted and restores your soul.

Make straight the way of The Lord.

Bow your knee.

Confess His Name.

The Lord Jesus Christ is here.

Alleluia and Amen.

In the Name of the Father and + of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

The peace of God which surpasses all understanding guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Amen.
