The Signs of the Parousia

Luke 21:25-36

Rev. John F. Wurst

The Second Sunday in Advent
The Lutheran Church of Christ the King
Duluth, Minnesota

Sun, Dec 9, 2012

"For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified." (1 Cor. 2:2)

Luke 21:25-36

The Second Sunday in Advent (Populus Zion)

In the Name of the Father and + of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

Today Jesus gives His last instruction to His disciples before He is nailed to the cross and dies to earn the salvation of the world. Today, Jesus talks about the End Times. He talks about the signs of the parousia, the Coming of the Son of Man.

The Earth will be distressed. All the nations of the world will be distressed with perplexity like the sea and the roaring waves. The sign of the End Times is chaos. Chaos is the result of the Creator withdrawing His benevolence toward His creation. God's goodwill toward His "very good" handiwork will turn into anger as His patience runs out with the corrupt and perverse that occupy His land.

The heavens and the earth will shake. The effects of these apocalyptic events are anguish, fear, and fainting. The unbelievers will be alarmed. Time will have run out. Their end is upon them. Death. God's wrath will pour out against those who do not fear Him. Jesus will Judge them and sweep them from His kingdom into the fires of hell.

The signs of the End Times are signs of comfort for you who hear the Word of The Lord and keep it. Jesus tells the parable of the fig tree to illustrate His point. Jesus says, "Look at the fig tree and all the trees budding, you see and know for yourselves that summer is near." Jesus paints a beautiful picture of life blooming and budding. He continues, "So you also, when you see these things happening, know that the kingdom of God is near."

You who gladly hear the Word of The Lord are nourished in knowledge of God the Father and His Son, Jesus Christ. You continue to grow and flourish, budding with good works in Jesus Christ. As you watch and pray for the parousia, the Coming of The Lord, you are guarded and protected by the very Word made flesh.

Hear the words of the Psalmist, "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble." The Good Shepherd continues to lead you to the still waters of Holy Baptism. He continues to nourish your soul with His Body and His Blood.

You find comfort in the signs of the End Times because the signs point to the parousia, the Coming of the Son of Man. Your comfort comes in the Word. Jesus says, "Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away."

The Word of The Lord Endures Forever.

Therefore, you will not fear through the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling.

Your life is secured in the Ark of the one hole catholic and apostolic Church. Jesus put you inside when He rescued you from the depths of darkness. He locked you in. His Blood covers your soul so that when death comes, it will pass over you because you are marked as one redeemed by Christ the crucified.

The Day of The Lord draws nigh. Do not become lazy. Do not give way to a life of darkness with carousing, drunkenness, and the cares of this life. The Lord comes like a thief in the night. Watch and pray lest you fall into temptation.

Jesus died on the cross and rose again from the dead to give you everlasting life. If you truly believe in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, then even if you fall down and break your neck in two, or drown in water, or perish in some other way, or the Last Day takes you away, nothing is going to harm you.

Your Father in heaven is gracious to you and shows His mercies to you new every day. You have nothing to fear. Jesus is your Friend. Your Brother. Your Lord and Savior. He died for you!

The ungodly don't care about such things. They don't need Jesus nor do they want any part of Him. Even if they saw and understood every sign of the End Times, they would still not believe. So let them go and be hanged!

May you, however, be numbered among the saints, those precious few who believe in Jesus Christ and fear the Name of The Lord. Fear Him, not as a Judge, but as your Father who loves you. Let the ungodly fear Him as a Judge. You live in the Christ. You've been born again of water and the Spirit.

Come Lord Jesus, come quickly come.

In the Name of the Father and + of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

The peace of God which surpasses all understanding guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Amen.
