Advent is About Jesus

Matthew 21:1-9

Rev. John F. Wurst

The First Sunday in Advent
The Lutheran Church of Christ the King
Duluth, Minnesota

Sun, Dec 2, 2012

"For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified." (1 Cor. 2:2)

Matthew 21:1-9

The First Sunday in Advent (Ad Te Levavi)

In the Name of the Father and + of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

It's not Christmas yet. Yet, you and the rest of the world rush to decorate. Rush to the stores to score those once in a lifetime deals. You rush out into the darkness to secure your own glory. You think this year's gifts must be bigger and better than the year before. It's not Christmas yet. It's Advent.

Big deal. Advent. Bah hum bug. What's the BIG deal about Advent? The BIG deal - the greatest deal - the deal of your life time is that Advent is about the parousia, that is, the coming of the Son of Man.

Advent is about Jesus. It's all about Jesus from His incarnation to the Second Coming. Advent is all about the angel coming to the lowly maiden, Mary, to tell her that she will be overshadowed from on high. Advent is all about the love of God the Father for His people He created in His own image, who in turn, disrespected and disobeyed Him by wanting to be Him. Advent is all about the Father's love in the sending of His only-begotten Son to be born in Bethlehem. Advent is all about the Son of God lying in a manger suffering for you.

Advent is all about Jesus who rode into the holy city on the back of an ass. It is about the King of kings riding into Jerusalem in Majesty. No pomp. No bands. No red carpet. The Lord of the heavens and earth rides on in lowly state. He rides on to do battle and wage war against the devil.

Advent is all about Jesus who comes into the world to preach the message of salvation in His Name. It is about Jesus teaching all people the Way, the Truth, and the Life which He embodies in the flesh of man. Advent is about Jesus coming to save the lost and condemned sinners of the world. Advent is about Jesus coming to set sinners, like you, free from an eternal death by atoning for your sins and the sins of the world.

Jesus has come. Jesus did die. He came and died for you. So why do you celebrate Advent? You celebrate Advent because continues to come to you hidden in, with, and under the bread and wine.

Jesus manifests Himself to you in the flesh with His precious Body and His innocent Blood which were given and shed for you for the forgiveness of your sins. You cannot see Jesus but He is here in the flesh. Open your eyes and behold your salvation. Jesus is here hidden in, with, and under earthly elements of bread and wine. You must believe this because said it is so in His Last Will and Testament.

Jesus said, on the night He was betrayed, Take eat. This is My Body given for you. In the same manner, He took the cup and said, Take drink. This is My Blood of the New Testament shed for you for the forgiveness of sins.

Jesus will not stay hidden for long. He is coming again on the clouds of heaven. He is coming with blast of the trumpet. He is coming with His angels to call the faithful unto Himself. Yes, Jesus is coming again.

When Jesus comes, His paraousia will be beyond any beauty you can imagine. When Jesus comes, He comes as the exalted King. He comes to say to you and all who confess His Name, enter into the kingdom. You are blessed. Jesus will put you on His right hand and He will talk with you about your life.

On the right hand of the Christ, there you will be because you believe. You will be with Jesus because you held fast to the Word of Truth during your journey through the valley of the shadow of death. You will live with Jesus and worship Him and His Father because the Blood of the Lamb that you drank during your life covers your soul. You will live the King when He comes again because you are marked with the cross of salvation.

Advent. It is a beautiful season. It is a season of watching and praying lest you fall into temptation. Live. Believe. Confess. Love. Pray. Serve. Worship. Trim your lamps. Watch. The Bridegroom is coming like a thief in the night.

In the Name of the Father and + of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

The peace of God which surpasses all understanding guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Amen.
