My Blood Shed for You

Luke 2:21

Rev. John F. Wurst

The Circumcision and Name of Jesus
The Lutheran Church of Christ the King
Duluth, Minnesota

Wed, Jan 2, 2013

"For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified." (1 Cor. 2:2)

Luke 2:21

The Circumcision and Name of Jesus

In the Name of the Father and + of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

In 30 words, St. Luke tells you a lot about Jesus and about you. Turn your attention now away from yourself and the world and hear the Word of The Lord.

The Lord said to Moses, "Speak to the children of Israel saying, '...And on the eighth day the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised.'" (Leviticus 12:3)

The eighth day, the day of the resurrection, the day of new birth, the male child was to be circumcised in order to fulfill the command of The Lord. The covenant of circumcision was given to Abraham to mark the people with the sign of The Lord as His chosen nation.

Circumcision means to cut away. Remove. Circumcision is a surgical procedure. It marks the boy as one claimed by God. Circumcision gave the promises of God to the boy. He became a member of God's chosen nation but more importantly, he became numbered among the saints.

It was the Nation of Israel to whom God gave His Name. It was Israel whom God told Moses and Aaron to bless. It was Israel who bore the Name of God.

Enter Jesus. He is eight days old. His earthly father and beloved mother bring Jesus to the Temple in order to keep the covenant established between God and Abraham. Jesus is presented to be circumcised. He is presented to fulfill the Law at eight days old.

Eight days old and Jesus sheds His Blood for you and for all mankind. The Blood of the Christ flows in fulfillment of the Law. It is by His Blood you are saved. It is by His Blood you are blessed.

According to the Law of God, you only deserve the wrath and punishment of God against your sins. You only deserve to suffer and die for your iniquities. You only deserve to be judged and condemned to hell for all eternity for your sins. Therefore, circumcise the foreskin of your heart and be stiff-necked no longer. (Deut. 10:16) Repent.

But, God's ways are greater than your ways. God's way is to save you. You cannot save yourself. Your works, emotions, knowledge, nothing by your hand will save you. So God intervenes and send you His only-begotten Son, Jesus. Jesus stands in your place. Jesus receives everything you deserve for your sins. His Blood was poured out for you. Jesus was the one Circumcised on your behalf. He was cut-off by the Father. Forsaken.

Jesus is the one who suffered for you. Jesus is the one who died on the cross for you. Jesus is the one who was Baptized with the fire of His Father's wrath against your sins. Jesus was the One who made the great exchange on the altar by giving you life in His death.

It is the Name of Jesus that saves you. You cannot be saved by any other Name. Jesus is your salvation. He is the Lamb God provided in the thorns and thickets of this fallen world to be nailed to the altar of the tree. Jesus is the One who Name is written on your soul in Holy Baptism along with the Father's and the Holy Spirit's.

It is the Blood of this eight day old baby that covers your soul. His Blood forgives your sins. Remember the words of Isaiah and the promises of The Lord to you, "Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, they shall be as wool." (Is. 1:18)

This little Child named Jesus is the One who has washed away all your iniquity in Holy Baptism. Jesus is the One with whom you died and rose again in Holy Baptism. It is the righteousness of Jesus that covers you like a cloak. You are holy because Jesus is holy.

The Blood of this Child is what the crucified and risen Savior pours down your throat to forgive your sins and give you life and salvation. It is by the Blood of the Lamb you are saved and given everlasting life.

In the Name of the Father and + of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

The peace of God which surpasses all understanding guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Amen.
